safe Certified UL2272 HoverBoard! fire

What is UL2272 standard for Hoverboard?

Hoverboards are back in the limelight. These two wheel self-balancing scooters used to be very popular until they started catching fire and exploding. Accidents related to balance boards hit and spread worldwide, after countless months of safety warnings and reports of fires caused by hoverboards, U.S. government was finally forced to recall almost 500,000 smart balance boards from different manufacturers, distributors, and retailers in the U.S. collaborated by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission.

For few months, hoverboard industry appeared to be at death’s door. It was like the end of the road but it didn’t happen. The saying “If something bad happens, something good will come of it” seems to be true when the new generation of better self balance scooter bounced back in the market. The birth of new generation of hoverboard is because of UL’s public safety goal. They have thoroughly tested and certified the hoverboards to give peace of mind to all self-balancing board consumers.

UL 2272 (UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories) is the standard safety requirements for electrical systems for personal e-mobility devices like self balancing electric scooters as defined by UL.  It has the safety requirements for electrical systems for all self-balancing scooters or hoverboards. They are also known for the names smart balance wheel, electric smart scooter, electric skateboard, mini segway, smart drifting board and other names. Whatever we call it, consumer should look for hoverboards that carry the UL2272 safety requirements. This means that the hover boards have been found to meet all the safety requirements of UL.

The UL2272 requirements cover the electrical drive train system including battery system, other circuitry and electrical components for all electric powered scooters and other devices referred to as personal e-mobility devices as defined by UL. This standard is intended for evaluation of the safety of all hoverboards, batteries and chargers for energy and electrical shock hazards. However it does not evaluate the performance or reliability of all personal e-mobility devices such as hoverboards.

Hoveboards are hard to eradicate in the market especially now that there are hoverboards that have been tested and certified by UL. New generations of self-balancing scooters after recall are required to meet the standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to be eligible to be sold in the U.S. market. There are lots of companies claiming that they passed the required standards but not all of them have truly passed the UL safety standard for personal e-mobility devices like smart balance boards. As always counterfeit products and UL logo still exist to deceive consumers.

To distinguish authentic from counterfeit from you just need to look for UL 2272 holographic label featuring the UL Enhanced Mark. This reminds consumers that the UL 2272 certification met all the safety requirements of UL but it does not address riding safety because proper safety precautions should still be taken by the user when using self-balancing scooters even though it has a genuine UL holographic sticker.

With this UL 2272 safety standards consumers are safe from cheap and low quality hoverboards. This will end the fire and explosion caused by poorly manufactured self-balancing scooters and this will help in the continuous innovation of manufacturers towards a better looking, durable and high-quality personal e-mobility devices.
